Discussion Questions

Onward Reflection/Discussion Questions:

The main question each week is IN WHAT WAYS DOES THIS FILM INTERSECT WITH THE GOSPEL? HOW DID THE GOSPEL SPEAK THROUGH THIS FILM TO YOU?

The following questions have been prepared in anticipation of (but not limited to) what will be discussed in worship Sunday February 2nd:

The Immanence of the Kin(g)dom:

  • In Luke 10:9, Jesus says, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” What does this declaration mean for your life right now, today? How does it change the way you view your daily actions and interactions?

  • In Onward, Ian and Barley embark on a quest to bring back their father for one day. What is your personal "quest" or purpose in life? How does the understanding that God's Kingdom is here now impact how you pursue that purpose?

  • While initially resisting Barley’s persistent advocacy for magic, Ian and other characters eventually become more accepting. What might you take time to consider more deeply in this season? How might acceptance of some aspect of faith/life deepen your purpose in this season?

  • Jesus instructs His disciples to go and bring peace, heal the sick, and proclaim that God’s Kingdom is near. In what practical ways can you embody these actions in your daily life? What small acts of kindness or service can help you live with a "kingdom" mindset today?

  • How does the realization that God's Kingdom is not just a distant future event, but a present reality, inspire you to live more intentionally?

  • How can we, as a church community, take practical steps to embody the "kingdom mindset" in our local neighborhoods, workplaces, and daily lives?

Grief and Transformation:

  • In Onward, Ian’s journey is deeply connected to his grief over the loss of his father. How do you see grief playing a role in the characters’ transformations throughout the film? What role does grief play in the story of the Kingdom of God—how can grief lead to transformation and growth in faith?

  • In what ways have you experienced God's presence or comfort in your own times of grief? How can the Kingdom of God offer healing to the brokenhearted?

Self-Confidence and Faith:

  • Throughout Onward, Ian struggles with his self-confidence, but through his journey, he learns to believe in his own worth and abilities. How does Jesus’ message in Luke 10 challenge you to believe in your own role in the Kingdom of God, even when you doubt yourself?

How does understanding that the Kingdom of God is already here help you cultivate a sense of confidence in your purpose and identity in Christ?
